In the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) WISE Program, based on agriculture and engineering, we define "New Industry Creation: creation of new fields through cutting-edge research" and fosters excellent doctoral human resources with " bold conceptualization for the future and steady step-by-step implementation" who can carry this out.
The first stage of the curriculum aims to improve research planning skills, form teams that transcend gender, nationality, and specialist fields, understand diversity for leadership, and acquire English debate skills and international mindset.
The second stage aims to launch projects and build collaborative research systems.
The third stage aims to develop a plan of action to demonstrate the uniqueness of one’s own research to society.
A call for student applications is made every spring (around April) and autumn (around September). Applicants must be enrolling in Master course or Doctoral course at TUAT. Students in any areas and majors are eligible.
Please refer to the program homepage ‘Call for Application’ for details.
The WISE program aims to foster outstanding doctoral degree holders with the “ability to boldly conceive of the future and steadily execute step-by-step”, who can carry out the “creation of new industries = creation of new fields through advanced research capabilities” based on their expertise in agricultural science and engineering.
It provides an integrated five-year education program from the master’s to the doctoral course for the purpose above.
This program is operated by FLOuRISH and collaborates with the career development training for SPRING and BOOST scholars in FLOuRISH.
In this program, the program students improve their ability to “recognize the value of their own research and appeal it to society” from the first year, and have won numerous awards at TUAT Business Pitch Contest, Academic Entrepreneur Challenge, Forum for Graduate School Educational Reform, and academic conferences in Japan and overseas.
They have developed the advanced expertise they acquired in the laboratory with an eye to solving social issues and creating new fields, and have acquired the ability to appeal to society.
This is the most important thing for building a career path, and after completing the program, about 40% of graduates have found employment in industry, not only in academia.
Please refer to the program homepage ‘WISE Students Activities’ for details.
